Recess Before Lunch Schedule Podcast

As you may know I’m a retired principal but I’d be the first to admit that changing the education system is a lot like turning around a huge cruise ship in a small harbor. Possible but not probable and it requires lots of maneuvering.

However, a few brave principals across the nation are doing just that and bringing a long stranding school tradition to an end. They are advocating recess before lunch.

And in doing so they are getting some amazing results. Kids eat more, waste less food, return to class calmer, behave better and as a result instruction time is increased.

I advocate "Recess before lunch", why?
1. Vigorous exercise after eating harms body process, leading to cramp or stomach ache.
2. Recovery meal after eating helps stop muscle breakdown and store the energy as glycogen but not fat.
3. Inappropriate timing of eating and exercise especially hurt Type One Diabetics...too much Ketons accumulated and sicken them.

Melinda, thanks for your word. I'm a parent from Ann Arbor always visiting school and notice that even in other district (Novi), some schools put running program right after eating. i don't feel good on seeing some students suffering from stomach ache. Of course, I faced resistance and spent time on this issue. It seems that good change is happening in my school. In fact, recovery meal can help kids build muscle. Recess before eating has very strong scientific support.

You're in educational field. Please visit schools and tell them the benefits of the program. Quite many parents even don't know inappropriate timing of recess and lunch hurts their kids. Thanks!
