Grand Slamming: A program of poetry

Edutopia has a great feature on "slamming". If you've never heard of Slamming it is a competition at which poets read or recite original work. These performances are then judged on a numeric scale by previously selected members of the audience.

Global Writes, is a non-profit that has brought the art of slamming to the Bronx, and developed confidence and literary talents to the students. One student comments on her experiences in the program "To see classmates who would usually be throwing paper and screaming and hollering now sitting down in their seats and paying attention to one of their peers, and then to perform at other places and see people crying, is amazing," says Jesica Blandon, a graduate of JHS 145 who now participates in Global Writes as a sophomore at DreamYard Preparatory School, a Bronx charter school, and performs at independent slams across New York City. "That's when I really realized that my words were powerful."
