A former science and world history teacher was sworn in as the 27th state superintendent of public instruction Monday. Tom Torlakson, took his oath of office in the high school where he once taught high school science and history.
During his tenure in the CA Legislature, he acted to protect education funding, improve student nutrition and physical education, and ensure school safety. He carried notable new legislation for physical education including reinstating the School Compliance Reviews of physical education, and more recently legislation requiring passing the physical fitness test or continuing to take physical education throughout a student's high school career.
