PE Instruction Falls Short of Mandate
Monday, October 20, 2008
West Virginia children in more than 150 elementary schools did not receive the required 90 minutes of physical education each week during the 2007-2008 school year. California and Florida statistics tell them same story. Children are not receiving required PE instruction. In fact, only 67% of students received the required 90 minutes per week of physical education in WV.
Administrators of schools not meeting the mandated minute requirement said that a lack of physical education teachers and facilities were to blame. They also reported attempting to meet the mandate by strategies such as counting recess time, logging student activities before and after school and introducing more physical activity in classrooms.
