Schedule a Recess Event

In recognition of National Recess Week March 2-6 why not schedule a recess event?

Get kids up and get active. Perhaps schedule a "Recess Games Day." Have volunteers and teachers teach students a recess game and rotate students through age appropriate games and playground activities.

The once common middle school recess has all but disappeared in recent years. But in Wichita, Kansas recess is making a comeback. Truesdell Middle School principal, Jennifer Sinclair points out that "even prisoners get yard time." She also points out that scheduling, logistics, lack of outdoor play space and concerns over bullying have lead to a reduction in middle school recess.

PR-B's Family and Youth Services Coordinator, Denise Koring rounded up a group of volunteers last week to paint the new designs on the playground promising that the playground will promote both "peace and productive games and activities."

Past California Association of Health, Physical Education and Dance President, Mary Blackman, coordinator at the San Diego County Office of Education developed a great after school physical activity website for schools. It not only provides some suggested games and activities for 4-8th grades but also some video clips of students playing the games.
I'm often ask if I have developed any games for snow activities. I must admit that I haven't. Growing up in Southern California the need didn't exist as snow days are non-existent in the Los Angeles area. However, I stumbled upon a website with some suggestions.
